Nel post di oggi celebriamo il compleanno del grande chitarrista, compositore e cantante Jeff Beck, autentica leggenda vivente della musica rock, fusion, blues, hard rock, Heavy Metal etc….
Geoffrey Arnold “Jeff” Beck è nato a Sutton (UK) il 24 giugno 1944, si avvicinò alla musica fin da piccolo, cantando nelle chiese ed imparando la chitarra.
Nei primi anni ’60 Jeff iniziò a suonare come turnista, arrivando ad incidere due canzoni già nel 1964.
La svolta avvenne nel 1965, quando entrò a fare parte degli Yardbirds al posto di Eric Clapton, che era entrato nei Bluesbreakers di John Mayall.
Beck suonava la chitarra assieme a Jimmy Page ed insieme registrarono con la band l’ album Roger the Engineer nel 1966, rimanendo immortalato anche nel film Blow-Up di Michelangelo Antonioni.
Nel 1967 Jeff era già un nome della scena londinese, così decise di formare una band propria, chiamata Jeff Beck Group, in cui militavano Rod Stewart (voce), Ronnie Wood (basso), Nicky Hopkins (pianoforte) e Mick Waller (batteria).
Con questa band realizzò due album che gettarono le basi per il futuro Heavy Metal, intitolati Truth (1968) e Beck-Ola (1969).
Nel 1969 Stewart e Wood lasciarono il gruppo per entrare nei Faces e Beck rivoluzionò la formazione, chiamando Bob Tench alla voce, Clive Chapman al basso, Max Middleton alle tastiere, Cozy Powell alla batteria, creando una musica in cui il blues, il jazz il rock si fondevano insieme, gettando le fondamenta per la Fusion.
Dal 1975 Beck iniziò una straordinaria carriera solista, collaborando con artisti come Roger Waters, Carlos Santana, Brian May ed altri ancora.
Secondo la rivista Rolling Stone, Jeff Beck è il 5° miglior chitarrista di sempre, ma io lo vedo come il proseguo delle sperimentazioni di Jimi Hendrix, con sonorità e stili che hanno toccato tutti i generi musicali.
Certamente Jeff non è un musicista commerciale, tante volte la sua musica risulta difficile nella comprensione, ma questo è il frutto della sua costante ricerca e voglia di rimettersi in gioco.
