Oggi Joe Strummer avrebbe compiuto 65 anni, In suo ricordo vi posto il brano “Rock The Casbah” dei The Clash, con testo e video.
John Graham Mellor, in arte Joe Strummer, era nato ad Ankara (Turchia) il 21 agosto 1952.
Joe è deceduto a Broomfield (USA) il 22 dicembre 2002 a seguito di un infarto.
Cantante, chitarrista ed attore, fu il leader dei “Clash”, uno dei maggiori gruppi “Punk” e rock della seconda metà degli anni ’70.
A mio giudizio è troppo riduttivo definire i Clash come gruppo punk, perchè nella loro musica troviamo diverse fusioni di generi, tra cui reggae, blues e rockabilly.
Purtroppo a causa di attriti con alcuni membri del gruppo, i Clash si separarono nel 1983, anche se ci fu un tentativo mal riuscito di tenere il nome con altri componenti.
Joe intraprese una carriera solista, comparendo anche come attore in alcune produzioni indipendenti, purtroppo senza molta fortuna in entrambe le cose, ad eccezione della canzone “Love Kills”, colonna sonora del film “Sid & Nancy” del 1986.
Dopo un periodo poco proficuo, salvo qualche apparizione sporadica, come nei primi anni ’90 con i “Pogues”, Strummer nel 1995 formò una nuova band: “Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros”.
Nel 2001, con i Mescaleros, realizzò uno dei suoi migliori album dai tempi dei Clash, “Global A Go-Go”, che lo riportò ai favori della critica.
Purtroppo come sappiamo, di lì a poco avvenne la prematura scomparsa di Joe.
In seguito alla sua morte sono usciti due album potumi ed un film documentario sulla sua vita, grazie al regista ” Julien Temple”, dal titolo “Il futuro non è scritto-Joe Strummer.
Il brano “Rock The Casbah”, è estratto dall’album “Combact Rock” dei The Clash del 1982.
