Kirk Lee Hammett è nato a San Francisco il 18 novembre 1962, è un chitarrista e compositore statunitense membro dei Metallica.
Hammett è considerato uno dei più importanti chitarristi della scena thrash metal, è stato classificato al secondo posto insieme a James Hetfield nella classifica di Guitar World sui cento più grandi chitarristi metal di sempre dietro al leggendario Tony Iommi.
Il chitarrista fondò gli Exodus nel 1980 e nel 1983 furono la band di supporto dei Metallica: proprio durante quel tour, la band di James Hetfield dovette allontanare Dave Mustaine e Hammett fu chiamato a sostituirlo.
For Whom the Bell Tolls è un singolo dei Metallica, pubblicato nel 1984 ed estratto dal secondo album in studio Ride the Lightning.
