Mark Knopfler, leggendario chitarrista, cantante, compositore, leader dei Dire Straits, è nato a Glasgow (UK) il 12 agosto 1949.
In attività dal 1965, Mark Freuder Knopfler è uno dei più importanti chitarristi del rock, anche se definirei riduttivo inserirlo in un genere solo, perchè nella sua musica c’è blues, jazz, folk.
Straordinari e poetici sono i suoi testi, dove le persone umili, l’ amore, i problemi sociali vengono cantati dalla sua voce non dotata, ma capace di emozionare dando risalto ai temi dei suoi brani.
La sua tenica chitarrista, che non prevede l’ uso del plettro, è una caratteristica del suo sound.
Raggiunse la notorietà mondiale con i Dire Straits, esordendo con la bellissima canzone “Sultan of Swing“, autentico capolavoro rock che portò la band ai vertici delle classifiche mondiali.
Dopo lo scioglimento del gruppo nel 1995, Mark Knopfler ha proseguito come solista collaborando con artisti di tutto il mondo, mettendo al loro servizio la sua grande abilità musicale.
