Howard Duane Allman, soprannominato Skydog, nacque a Nashville il 20 novembre 1946. Iniziò a suonare la chitarra grazie al fratello Gregg, diventando un appassionato di blues, dopo avere assistito ad un concerto di B.B. King.
I due fratelli Allman, formarono i The Allman Brothers Band nel 1969, proponendo un grande blues, intriso di Southern Rock e Country.
Durante un concerto di Taj Mahal, rimase affascinato dall’uso dello slide, mettendo a punto una propria tecnica, che prevedeva l’ uso di una bottiglietta vuota di Coricidin (fonte Wikipedia).
Nel 1968 Eric Clapton volle conoscere Duane Allman, assoldandolo per l’ album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs dei Derek and the Dominos.
Purtroppo il 29 ottobre 1971, Duane morì a Macon, a seguito di un incidente di moto.
La rivista Rolling Stone, ha collocato il musicista al 9° posto nella lista dei 100 migliori chitarristi di sempre.
