Robert Cray è nato a Columbus, il 1º agosto 1953, è chitarrista e cantante, la cui attività è cominciata intorno al 1973.
Cray è considerato uno dei padri del blues moderno, nonostante la grande influenza di stile tratta da Albert Collins, con il quale collaborò agli inizi degli anni 70.
Smoking Gun è una canzone uscita come singolo nel 1986.
Il brano raggiunse il n. 2 della classifica Rock Tracks di Billboard Album e il n. 22 della Billboard Hot 100 . L’anno successivo, Cray ricevette la nomination al MTV Video Music Awards, come miglior nuovo artista in un video .
