Ray Charles Robinson nacque ad Albany (USA) il 23 settembre 1930, divenne cieco al’età di 8 anni a causa di un glaucoma.
Studiò in una scuola per ciechi, dove sviluppò una grande passione per la musica, imparando a suonare e comporre e nel 1947 incise il suo primo disco.
Nel 1959 arrivò il grande successo con la canzone “What’d I Say” e nel 1980 prese parte al film cult “The Blues Brothers”.
Negli anni ha pubblicato una serie straordinaria di successi, come “Georgia On My Mind”, “Hit the Road Jack”, “Unchain My Heart”,” I’ve Got a Woman” e molte altre ancora.
Nella sua carriera, Ray vinse ben 13 premi Grammy Awards, oltre ad altri importanti riconoscimenti.
Nel 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine lo nominò 10º tra i 100 più grandi artisti di tutti i tempi e 2º nella classifica del 2008 dei 100 più grandi cantanti di sempre. (Fonte Wikipedia)
Ray è stato uno dei massimi esponenti della musica Soul ed R&B, spaziando nel Blues, nel Jazz fino al rock’n roll.
The Genius morì il 10 giugno del 2004 a Beverly Hills, a seguito di una malattia al fegato.
