Louis Daniel Armstrong noto anche con il soprannome di Satchmo o Pops (New Orleans, 4 agosto 1901 – New York, 6 luglio 1971) è stato un trombettista e cantante statunitense.
Armstrong è stato uno tra i più famosi musicisti jazz del XX secolo, raggiungendo la fama inizialmente come trombettista, ma fu anche uno dei più importanti cantanti jazz, soprattutto verso la fine della carriera. Viene considerato una delle più grandi e influenti personalità in campo musicale del ‘900, e le sue innovazioni interpretative hanno permesso alla musica jazz di evolversi ed espandersi, aiutandola a diventare un genere celebre in tutto il mondo. Personalmente ritengo Louis uno straordinario interprete, dotato di grande tecnica e personalità. La sua voce roca, riesce ancora oggi a penetrarti l’ anima, regalando emozioni come poesia.
Il suo sound innovativo, il suo modo di suonare la tromba, portarono la musica nera ai vertici mondiali, nonostante i vari boicottaggi del tempo verso le comunità afro-americane..
Quando nel 1964 pubblicò il brano “Hello, Dolly!” scavalcò i Beatles al 1° posto di Billboard, vincendo l’ anno successivo il Grammy Awards.
Go Down Moses è uno spiritual statunitense, in cui viene descritto un evento del Libro dell’Esodo dell’Antico Testamento.
Nel brano Israele rappresenta gli schiavi afro-americani, mentre il Faraone rappresenta il loro padrone.
La canzone diventò popolare grazie a Paul Robeson. Il 7 febbraio 1957 la canzone viene registrata a New York da Louis Armstrong con la Sy Oliver’s Orchestra. (Fonte Wikipedia)
